“What bumpers?” I asked, confused.
“The bumpers on your car.” she said.
Even more confused, I said, “How do you know the bumpers are working?”
“Because you can hear them.” she replied in a voice like I was being silly.
“What do my bumpers sound like?” I asked.
“Daddy,” she said in an exasperated voice, “they sound like they always do. They’re making the bumpers sound.”
“What exactly do you think the bumpers are?” I asked.
“They’re the part of your wheel that touches the bumps in the road.” she said.
